Pipecat Alternatives Compared (2026)
Pipecat is a free, open-source Python framework (BSD-2 license) maintained by Daily. You can host it yourself, or run it on Pipecat Cloud at $0.01 per active minute for an agent-1x (0.5 vCPU, 1 GB), with unlimited concurrency. Daily's WebRTC voice is free for 1:1 voice sessions on Pipecat Cloud, phone dial-in and dial-out is $0.018 a minute (SIP included), and your speech-to-text, LLM and voice providers bill you directly. The alternatives below range from another open-source framework with its own cloud (LiveKit Agents) to hosted platforms billed per minute (Vapi's $0.05/min hosting fee, Retell's $0.07–$0.31/min, Bolna from $0.06/min) and Vocode, an open-source library whose last code push was in November 2024. Prices are from each vendor's own pricing page.
Pipecat Cloud's penny a minute is just the hosting. Your speech, LLM and voice providers bill you on top, so compare whole calls, not headline rates.
LiveKit Agents, Vapi, Retell AI, Bolna and Vocode compared with Pipecat and Pipecat Cloud on published pricing, hosting, concurrency and how much of the voice pipeline you run yourself.

What to check before you choose
- Compare what each minute covers. Pipecat Cloud's $0.01/min and Vapi's $0.05/min are hosting fees: transcriber, LLM and voice are billed on top. Vapi's own calculator estimates about $82–$129 for 1,000 minutes with Deepgram, OpenAI and ElevenLabs. Retell lists $0.07–$0.31/min depending on the voice, LLM and telephony you pick. Bolna's $0.06/min includes speech-to-text, LLM and voice when you use its bundled models, with telephony and a platform fee added per minute.
- Always-on costs extra. Pipecat Cloud's reserved agents stay on and bill every reserved minute ($0.0005/min for agent-1x) until you turn them off, on top of the active rate when they take calls.
- Check concurrency before launch day. Pipecat Cloud has no cap. LiveKit Cloud allows 5 concurrent agent sessions on its free Build plan and 20 on Ship (from $50/mo). Vapi starts at 4 concurrent calls (its $29/mo Core package raises that to 10), Retell includes 20, and Bolna's Pilots plan tops out at 25.
- Want open source with a managed cloud too? LiveKit Agents is also open source. On LiveKit Cloud, Build is free with 1,000 agent session minutes and Ship starts at $50/mo with 5,000, then $0.01 a minute. Its turn-detection and interruption models are free for agents hosted on LiveKit Cloud; self-hosted agents get a development allowance, then pay per request.
- Price the phone side. Pipecat Cloud lists PSTN dial-in and dial-out at $0.018/min and SIP at $0.003–$0.02/min. Transfers keep the call anchored to Daily, so minutes keep accruing, unless you use SIP REFER, which hands the call off for $0.20 per transfer. Retell lists US calls on its numbers at $0.015/min (no charge on your own SIP trunk), and numbers at $2 a month.
- Vocode is free under the MIT license, but its repository says it is looking for community maintainers and its last code push was on Nov 15, 2024. Fine for a prototype; check that before you build a business on it.
- Try before you commit: Vapi gives $5 in credits, Retell $10, Bolna $5, and LiveKit's Build plan includes $2.50 of inference credits. Pipecat itself costs nothing to run on your own servers.
